Found this Prince Charming independent short film on Vimeo and wanted to share it, I thought it would be a nice break from the current trend of buffoonish/villainous portrayals of Prince Charming right now, enjoy:

I'd like to take some time today to share one of my favorite artists, Heather Dale. She has done songs inspired by Arthurian legends, the occasional folk/fairy tale, and covers of traditional carols and folk songs among others, so I thought she'd be appropriate to mention. Here's two of her folk/fairy tale related songs:

So the latest King Arthur adaptation was released in the USA last week and the UK this week. Starring Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law, Djimon Hounsou, Eric Bana and plenty of other familiar names, this one was directed by Guy Ritchie.

Have you seen it yet? What did you think of it?

[Spoilers allowed in the comments, so please be wary if you haven't seen it yet!]

There was a slight mishap with [community profile] once_upon_fic's anon period, namely, there wasn't one. Also, one of these fics isn't from this collection, but it's relevant to this list :)

I have two more here-appropriate fics open in tabs, but I won't rec them yet as I haven't read them yet—one's 7.6K and one's 13K and I do actually have to do things today that aren't read fic XD

lots fic! )

[deviantart.com profile] irenhorrors is one of my favorite artists. Her style is so striking! She recently posted Snow White in Woods. Great unsettling feel. I'd run through those woods if I could wear that dress!

Hi everyone! It's Syttende Mai (Norwegian Constitution Day) and I wrote about "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" here, and I thought some of you might be interested. :)

Does anyone else have any favourite Norwegian or Scandinavian fairytales?

Rather than spam the earlier rec-req post with self-recs, I am making a post to rec my favorites among everything I've got posted to AO3 in a fairytale canon!

There's rather a lot ;D )

I first heard this song years ago, and I've been lucky enough to watch her perform it live. Absolutely beautiful song, with more fairytale references than you can shake a broomstick at!

WOW! I'm so impressed at how many people have already joined! Thank you so much.

So, a discussion question.

How do you feel about modern reinterpretations of fairy tales?

I'm thinking about things like Gregory Maguire's Wicked, the TV show Once Upon a Time, or classic style retellings such as Shannon Hale's The Goose Girl?

Do you think fairy tales should be left alone? Do you love or hate modern retellings? What are your favourites? What fairy tale would you love to see a modern version of?

Welcome!

Welcome to [community profile] folkandfairy!

This community has been set up for purely gratuitous reasons - I love all sorts of fairy and folk tales and wanted a place to discuss them. For the purposes of this community, the definition of folk or fairy tale includes stories such as Peter Pan, Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland and Tolkein's works. These each have an element of fairy tale in them, whether it's actual fairies, or the myriad magic enchantments that exist in those worlds.

It also includes the more modern interpretations or "re-imaginings", such as Gregory McGuire's Wicked, or Seanan Maguire's Indexing, or even Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (seriously, I adore that film!).

Feel free to discuss stories, post fic or icons, or just share ideas. We have a couple of teeny rules:
  • Don't be a dick. Be nice to other people, even if you disagree with what they've said. If you have a problem with someone, tell the admin ([personal profile] kayim )
  • Don't post links to illegal copies of books, comics, TV shows or movies.
  • If you're posting about something newly released, please use cut tags. Don't spoil someone else's enjoyment.
Thanks for joining, and have fun!
